Challenge
Augustine Institute operates Formed, a subscription streaming platform for Catholic educational content, originally built by Impekable on Vimeo OTT with Core. The Bending Spoons acquisition of Vimeo and Brightcove, paired with significant engineering team layoffs, created an immediate concern about platform continuity, support, and roadmap.
Approach
The work split in two. One: stabilise and modernise the Formed streaming platform. Two: build a Video Provider Abstraction Layer between the application and the underlying provider, so future provider changes happen without code changes. VPAL was not a deliverable on the original brief — it was the structural answer to the structural risk Augustine Institute was carrying.
Outcome
Formed continues to run. VPAL is now Beta-stage product IP, with Augustine Institute as the lighthouse client. Migration timelines reduced by 60%+ versus a ground-up re-integration. The same VPAL pattern is now offered as a product to other enterprise customers facing the same provider-risk question.
